Supported by the Women in Sport funding from Sport Ireland and in partnership with Corduff Sports Centre, the Walking Handball programme returns after Christmas break. Check some of the benefits of the sport below:

As we age, maintaining an active lifestyle becomes increasingly crucial for our overall well-being. Walking handball is a sport that not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters social connections among older adults.

  1. Low-Impact, High Fun: Unlike traditional handball, walking handball is a low-impact variation that minimizes strain on joints and muscles. This makes it an ideal choice for older adults seeking an enjoyable way to stay active without overexerting themselves.

  2. Cardiovascular Health: Walking handball provides an excellent cardiovascular workout. Engaging in this sport helps improve heart health by enhancing circulation, lowering blood pressure, and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The gentle yet effective nature of walking handball makes it accessible to individuals of various fitness levels.

  3. Enhanced Balance and Coordination: The game's dynamic movements, such as walking, passing, and shooting, contribute to improved balance and coordination. These benefits are particularly valuable for older adults, as they help reduce the risk of falls and enhance overall mobility.

  4. Social Connection: Beyond the physical benefits, walking handball offers a fantastic opportunity for social interaction. Joining a walking handball club provides a supportive community where friendships can thrive. The shared passion for the sport creates a positive and inclusive environment, combating feelings of isolation that can sometimes accompany aging.

  5. Mental Well-Being: Physical activity is closely linked to mental well-being, and walking handball is no exception. Engaging in regular exercise releases endorphins, reducing stress and promoting a positive mood. The strategic elements of the game also stimulate cognitive functions, contributing to mental sharpness.

  6. Adaptability and Inclusivity: Walking handball is adaptable to different fitness levels and can be easily modified to accommodate individuals with varying physical abilities. This inclusivity makes it a sport that can be enjoyed by a wide range of participants, fostering a sense of belonging and unity.

The Walking Handball sessions happen every Monday, from 11 am to 12 pm in Corduff Sports Centre and is always welcoming new participants.
