IOHA Structure

The IOHA is registered as a limited company, with its Articles and Memorandums of Association follow normal sporting practice as laid out by the ISC.

Board Profile September 2018

IOHA President.

Fintan Lyons was reelected for a further 3 year term at the associations 2017 AGM. Fintan has been involved in handball in Ireland since the 1980’s where he was a player and coach with Tallaght handball club.

IOHA Secretary

Michael Moloney was first elected to  the Board of the IOHA in 2008 and became Secretary in 2009. He was reelected for a second term in 2016. Michael was a founding member of Lughnasa handball club and a former captain of the U-21 and Senior Men’s National team, he has also coached U-16 and U-17 Boys National Team Squads.

IOHA Treasurer

Darren Connolly was appointed to the Board of the IOHA in 2012 after being recruited through “Board Match”.Darren also takes a keen interest in the charity/not for profit sector and has lectured on directors responsibilities and the implications of audit for small charities. Darren acts as auditor for many charities and is a board member of the following charities:
Coolmine Therapeutic Community
Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association
SOSAD Ireland
Hesed House

Peter Caulfield was appointed to the Board of the IOHA in February 2014. Peter had previously served on the Board of the IOHA in the 90’s and is a former IOHA President. Peter qualified as an EHF Delegate in 2012 and has officiated at the 2013 EHF U-19 European Championships.


Women’s Handball Representative

In July 2018 Bettina Bordas was appointed to the position of Women’s Handball Representative on the Board of the IOHA. Bettina’s role is to ensure that the promotion and development of the Women’s game remains central to the associations aims and that the opinions and concerns of present members are addressed. As part of her role Bettina will chair the Women’s Handball Development Committee. Bettina is a member of Dublin International HC and has played the sport at a high level in her native Hungary. Unfortunately injury brought an end to her professional playing career in her early 20’s where she turned her attention to Coaching.

Governance and Legal Director.

March 2016 saw the appointment of Eoin Gallagher to the Board of the Irish Olympic Handball Association. Eoin is a practicing Barrister and Attorney for the State of New York. Eoin’s role will include the following

  • To act as the Board Member with specific responsibility for the strategic oversight of the Governance & Legal Business Area for the IOHA including:
    • compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
    • compliance with public grant funding requirements
    • IOHA constitutional documents

Eoin is a former legal advisor to the Irish Softball Association and previously played handball with both UCD and Astra Handball Clubs.

Technical Director

Andrea Ongaro became the IOHA’s Technical Director in 2015 and was appointed to the Board in 2017. Andrea has nearly 20 years experience of handball in Ireland having moved here to study in UCD in the 90’s from his native Italy. In 2017 he qualified as an EHF Master Coach having achieved all the other various Coaching Awards. He is the head coach of Astra Handball Club.
