Ladies Squad to build on International Weekend

The Irish Ladies squad will look back at the weekend just gone in Gormanstown College and take the lessons learned into their future development.

The Tri-Nations friendly tournament which featured Ireland and the U-19 squads of Belgium and Great Britain was the brainchild of the IOHA’s Women’s Handball Development Committee and it’s Technical Director, Andrea Ongaro. Planning began in late 2018 on the fringes of the EHF Euro 2018.

Belgium are in the midst of a regeneration of their Ladies program with the emphasis on U-19 and U-23 squads while our nearest neighbours Great Britain are continuing to build on the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games with a full suite of International squads in the various different age groups.

While the results didn’t go the way of the Irish girls with them being soundly beaten in both matches the weekend provided an insight for them into the standards they need to aspire to on the International stage.

The matches were for most of the squad their first taste of International handball and the IOHA was delighted to host the matches as part of the Cup weekend, the 1st internationals on Irish soil in a number of years.

Where to next for the squad will be decided by the Technical Director and their coaches but everyone in the IOHA wishes them well.
