M18 November Training Camp in Warrington

The Irish Men’s 18 squad recently traveled to Warrington as part of their preparations for next years EURO 18 in Austria, below is a report on the weekend.

Warrington and Liverpool were the locations of the Irish Boys U18 and U16 teams autumn training camp and friendly matches. The squad with 16 players spent part of their mid-term break, from 3rd to 5th November 2017 in England. They gained valuable experience by training, playing matches, yoga stretching and taking part in tactical lessons provided by coaches Alexander Markovic and Tomas Martinonis. The teams were based in the Tim Parry and Johnathan Ball Peace Centre in Warrington, England. The Peace Centre has a residential wing that was an excellent base for the camp and it provided accommodation, catering, entertainment, meeting rooms and a sports hall.
On the evening of Day 1, after travelling to Warrington, the players took on the Warrington Wolves in U16 and U18 matches at Birchwood Leisure Centre. This was a tough contest as the Wolves youth teams belong to the leading youth teams in England.
Day 2 saw action in the Liverpool College sports hall with teams from Liverpool Handball Club (U16) and Deva Handball Club (U18 and U16). The three U16 teams played a tournament against each other. The two U18 teams played a full match which proved to be an excellent challenge and very entertaining for the spectators.
On Sunday (Day 3) there was a flurry of matches in the Greenbank Centre in Liverpool with teams from the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University. Liverpool Speke Garston also provided a team of masters with some founding members of the club. Friendlies between the more experienced Liverpool players and the U18 showed a close contest between the teams. Further matches of the U16 with masters and a mix of more or less experienced university players also provided very evenly matched action.
The team and the IOHA express their thanks to all the players, coaches, managers, referees and handball enthusiasts from Warrington, Liverpool and Deva who have made this training camp a great success.
