Dublin International Retain Senior Men’s Title

After a weekend of high drama in Phibblestown, ┬áDublin International HC emerged victorious from the IOHA Final4 tournament and in doing so retained their title as Irish Senior Men’s Champions.

In a close encounter in the 1st semi final on Saturday which was only really resolved in the last minute DI beat Lughnasa HC, who had only beaten the Blanchardstown side 2 weeks previously on a scoreline of 23-20.

The second semi final was another close encounter with Final 4 debutants UCD HC causing a shock by ousting top rated regular season team, Astra HC on a scoreline of 20-19.

If anyone thought all the tension was used up on Saturday then they were pleasantly surprised as Lughnasa and Astra served up a handball classic, Astra went in to the second half 13-12 up and it was nip and tuck for the rest of the game. With the game tied at 29 each and the game seemingly heading for extra time an interception by Irish and Lughnasa captain, Alan O’Brien followed by a clever finish saw the Tallaght side claim bronze. It was a disappointing end to the tournament for Astra who must console themselves with their IOHA Cup win earlier in the season.

In the final, DI had some fresh legs for the fray with Hichem Sefroun available for the game and he and his team mate Dragos Busuioc helped power their team to a 37-31 victory over the students.

This added to the title their ladies section won all adds up to a very successful season for Dublin International, you can be sure that all the other teams in the league will be eager to topple them next season.
