Lughnasa v DCU

The mid point if the season for Lughnasa and DCU. Lughnasa had a narrow edge going into this match having won more games, in fourth place with 6 points, DCU were fifth with 4 points. But many would argue that DCU had played against trickier opposition. Whatever your feelings about who would win, it would prove to be another nail biting encounter. The scores opened well for DCU who rallied ahead. Lughnasa couldn’t mount a decent attack, DCU easily cut through the defence. But Lughnasa fought back and brought the scores level. Before long this momentum carried Lughnasa into a three goal lead. But it was not to be. DCU, re-energized after a time-out applied pressure and it was all square at the break.

The scores stood 17-17 at half-time. Going into the second half, it was anyone’s game. Both teams could not gain a hold of the match. Neither team pressed ahead of the other. It was played out in this fashion until 10 minutes remained in the game. Just as it appeared as if both teams were settling in for a draw, a DCU player was suspended and was sent to the bench. Though the penalty was not converted, this was the turning point of the game. Just as DCU punished Sligo the week previous in the final minutes during a suspension, Lughnasa gave themselves some breathing space. Lughnasa racked up a five goal lead in as many minutes. DCU depleted with few subs could not counter.

Though DCU called a time-out and stunted Lughnasa’s attack by man marking their main attacking threat Alan O’Brien; Lughnasa played the ball wide to the wings and stemmed a potential DCU upset. The final scores stood Lughnasa 37-30 DCU. The final result hide how close a game it was and that the winner was only decided within the last 10 minutes. Lughnasa hold their place in fourth, DCU remain in fifth but the gap between the teams has grown. Lughnasa’s win today may just have secured a place in the playoffs.
