International Olympic Handball competition to generate thousands for Limerick

The IHF/EHF Challenge Trophy, which is being held in Limerick, at the UL Sports Arena, is set to generate thousands of euro for Limerick city and county. The event which is being hosted by the Irish Olympic Handball Association (IOHA) will see Ireland’s Olympic Handballers take on England, Georgia and the Faroe Islands.

“ We are delighted about competing in the IHF/EHF Challenge Trophy, it will be an amazing experience for myself as captain and for the rest of the lads. We are looking forward to playing in the UL Sports Arena and it is such a plus that Ireland are hosting the Trophy this year,” said Paddy McAuley Irish Senior Men’s Olympic Handball Captain.

“The Challenge Trophy will take place in Limerick with the assistance of Shannon Development, UL and the Carlton Hotel Group. The Challenge Trophy will generate close to €250,000 for Limerick, through hotel rooms, the use of the UL Sports arena and through the footfall of people that will come due to the event,” explained the General Manager of the IOHA Lúcás Ó’Ceallachain.

“We the IOHA are looking forward to a great event, through careful planning in conjunction with Shannon Development and our supporting International Agencies we have been able to organise a professional sporting event. We would invite everyone down to check out this sport, which is played by over 15 million people worldwide. With this International Competition being played in Limerick, Irish people have the chance to see this exciting sport played live,” said Lúcás.

“The Challenge Trophy Competition is yet another prestigious event in a series of events which have taken place during 2011. It is gratifying for Limerick to see this International Handball Competition taking part here,” said Deputy Mayor Kevin Kiely.

The Challenge Trophy will run from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 November in the UL Sports Arena, The first match will be thrown in at 5.45pm and entry to all games will be free. For more information and a timetable of events log onto
