Ireland fall to superior Turkish team after brave fight

Ireland as expected going into this, their third group A match were defeated by Turkey 41 (18) 26 (14) however as the scoreline shows the team gave an excellent account of themselves as they harried and battled for the 60 minutes.

Turkey competing in Bulgaria only after a drawn match in Kosovo saw them miss out on qualification automatically from phase 1 were always going to be Ireland’s toughest opposition.

An outstanding first half from Ireland saw a game of nip and tuck with Ireland only trailing by the odd goal however disaster was to strike when Irish captain Alex Kulesh suffered a game ending injury to his shoulder in the 20th minute. The boys in green rallied around but coming up to half time 3 unanswered goals from the Turks saw Ireland trail 18-14 at the break.

In the second half try as they might Ireland couldn’t reel in the Turks and as tiredness set in they went 7 unanswered to extend their lead even further.

Top scorer for Ireland was Joshua Krohn Grace with 7 goals while goalkeeper Alim K O’Sullivan picked up Irish Man of the match after some outstanding saves.

Ireland now move on to a placement match against Malta on Friday (12 noon Irish time)
