First silverware for Dublin City just 2 years after their formation

Astra lose both finals, but overall a good season for the club

Dublin City Handball Club added their names to the list of winners of the IOHA Senior Men’s league in the finale of a great weekend of handball in Dublin City University. They ran out convincing winners against an Astra side who stayed with them until the mid point in the second half. A red card and a further 2 minute suspension around the 40 minute mark did not help their cause and this allowed the boys in yellow take a strangle hold of the game which they did not relinquish.

Speaking after the game Astra Coach Andrea Ongaro said “Congratulations to Dublin City, they were the best team on the day and the best team in the league all season”

Irish International and Dublin City goalkeeper Andrew Maher said “This is a great achievement for our club and we hope to build on it for next season. Astra are a good team and it was a great final between us.”

In the semi finals on Saturday Dublin City easily beat the Men from UCD on a scoreline of 38-23, meaning UCD would not make their 3rd final in a row.

The second semi final was a much closer affair with Astra coming out winners on a 28-27 scoreline having been down 14-12 at halftime and so ended DI’s hopes of 4 titles in a row.

At the trophy presentation IOHA President Fintan Lyons stated that it was hard to remember a league final without Dublin International in it given their dominance in recent years but is sure they will be back stronger next season.
