Double Double Delight For Dublin International HC

Saturday April 23rd 2016 saw the curtain come down on a remarkable season for Dublin International Handball Club. The time was 17.53 and the final whistle had just gone in the IOHA Men’s league final and with victory the Men from Blanchardstown had completed the final piece of the jigsaw in a double double winning season for the Club.

Earlier in the day the DI Ladies had seen off the Challenge from Astra HC on a scoreline 17-11. The South Dublin Club’s ┬áchances of victory evaporated in the 1st half as DI led at the break 8-1 but credit to Coach Andrea Ongaro and his team they never gave up and the won the 2nd half but as always the match clock was their enemy.

Next up on the DCU Court was a repeat of last years finals between UCD and DI, and the game played in front of vocal supporters for both teams was nip and tuck with DI leading 13-12 at the break. Despite some outstanding performances from some on the students side, DI always looked as if they had another trick up their sleeve and it was this guile that saw them take victory on a 27-24 scoreline. UCD despite not knowing from year to year what the complete make of their squad will be have retained a core membership which is reaping rewards on and off the court and have turned into a powerhouse within Irish handball.

IOHA President Fintan Lyons was on hand to present both league trophies to  jubilant team captains and congratulated Dublin International on their success.

DI can bask in their success over the summer till the new season begins when the challenge begins again. Astra and UCD men and women will be waiting for them and it is hoped that Dublin City, UCC and Lughnasa can regroup and also provide a challenge to the Double Double Champions from Dublin 15.

The Women and Men from DI celebrate their victories.
