Mixed Emotions For Astra And UCD

After 2 semi finals involving the Men’s and Ladies teams from the same 2 Clubs, the members of Astra and UCD Handball Clubs will be happy and sad in equal measure. Happy that they have a team in the Senior final, sad at what could have been.

The first semi final involved the men of both clubs and following 60 minutes of end to end handball it was the students who emerged victorious on a 29-26 scoreline. Top scorer for the UCD men was shared between National team players, Alex Kulesh and Julian Eberle with 8 goals each while for Astra fellow Ireland player Omar Alsaffar also chipped in with 8 goals but unfortunately to no avail.

The ladies semi was a passionate affair with some robust defending from both sides but at all times in a fair manner. The lead changed hands several times throughout the course of the match with Astra going in at the break with a 14-13 lead thanks in part to a direct shot from 9 metres over the UCD wall from Katrine Westum when time was up. The second half was equally exciting with the final result only decided in the last minute and a 27-26 victory for Astra.

The prize for victory for both teams? A place in the final against Dublin International HC and an opportunity to prevent the Blanchardstown club from completing a league and cup double.
