U-20 Men’s Squad Depart for IHF Trophy In Andorra

The Irish Men’s U-20 squad departed Ireland today to take place in the European leg of the International Handball Federation’s (IHF) Trophy which takes place in Andorra from May 21st to May 25th.

2014 is the first time a European event has taken place in the intercontinental tournament which is organised for countries where handball is a developing sport.

The young Irish squad are travelling without a number of players due to state and college examinations but still contains a number of players who have played with the senior national team.

There are 8 teams participating in the IHF Trophy and they are divided into 2 groups  which will compete on a round robin basis before the placement matches at the weekend.

Group 1 Andorra, The Faroe Islands, Azerbaijan and Ireland.

Group 2 Moldova, Georgia,Great Britain and Albania.

The trip  also benefits handball development in Ireland as the 2 coaches travelling with the team will undergo training from IHF lecturers as will the referee couple who have traveled from Ireland with the team. The referees, Andis and Tomas will also officiate at the tournament.
