Lughnasa Girls take Irish Ladies Cup

The girls from Lughnasa Handball Club pulled off a major surprise last Friday night when they won the inaugural IOHA ladies Cup.The format of the competition was a 3 team mini group and involved teams playing each other twice over the course of the evening.

Lughnasa were facing Dublin rivals Astra who have being ruling the roost recently as regards Ladies Handball and North Kildare who had their ranks swelled with some new players from Limerick and Kilkenny. Both Astra and North Kildare were made up of players from primarily outside of Ireland so the Tallaght based club knew they were in for a tough evening.

All bar one of Lughnasa’s players are from the Tallaght area having learnt to play handball in their local schools and amongst some of the opposition they would face was a former professional player from Austria.First up was a match against Astra and the 3 goal win for Lughnasa really put the cat amongst the pigeons as to where the final destination for the Cup would be. Lughnasa followed this victory up with 2 convincing score lines against North Kildare.

This meant the final match of the night would be the cup decider and a rematch with Astra, if the team from Dun Laoighaire/Rathdown could secure a victory by 3 goals or more they would be victorious overall. However the girls from Tallaght were not to be denied and sensible attack play accompanied by heroic defending ensured that even though they lost by 2 their greater goal difference meant the Cup will stay in Dublin 24 for the next 12 months.

Considering the average age of the team is 17 years it is hoped by their coaches that there is a lot more hopefully to come from this squad in the years to come.
